Entomophagy: Sampling Alternative Sources of Protein

While extending the boundaries of the berms and swales of a Monarch Butterfly habitat, some students made an interesting discovery. Their discovery has been amazing, entertaining, "grossing out", and satisfying students and chickens alike for years. Grub Worms! Also known as the larval stage of the June Beetle.
Common Name: June beetle (“June bug”)
Scientific Name: Phyllophaga sp.
Order: Coleoptera

Entomophagy, the practice of eating bugs and insects, is the norm in most parts of the world. Outside of Western societies insects are valued for their taste and nutrients.
Through a discussion of insects being a very inexpensive future source of protein, these students proudly volunteered to sample these delicacies.

June beetles are on this list of common edible insects, along with ants, cicadas, and cockroaches.
Girls Meets Bug
There are even local companies researching the future of this food sources. Hopper Foods

While some seemed very happy with their choice, other seemed to be regretting their decision.

They described it as tasting salty and very similar to coconut water. These kids are great! This awesome girl even decided to try another one. WAY TO GO!
