This week in the Green Academy, we’re working on finishing the first step of one of our habitat restoration project. This involves digging trenches to catch runoff from the rain and setting up a pond in the center of these trenches. We also have approximately a 1500 square feet of land set aside and prepared for a wildflower prairie of Texas natives. Seeds were sown just in time for the January rain.

Each step in the process involved many students and many man hours put in to get this simple stage ready. Phase two will start as soon as we can get to it.

Habitat Restoration/Creation

Folks, we've decided to attempt to combat invasives and the brutal summer heat to restore some of our reclaimed acreage.

The first two spots we're going after involve reclaiming runoff and sowing native seeds. More to follow, but please ask questions if you're interested.

 Native Plant Of The Week

This week’s native plant we have chosen is the flame acanthus, also known as the hummingbird bush. You can find them here at Small near our gardens! It has a sweet nectar that you can eat too. The flame acanthus is extremely drought tolerant and natively grows in dry, rocky areas. The plant is very adaptable and can survive our summer heat and most Texas winters.
